James' wife Clara was previously married by Justice of the Peace J. M. Amos to Harry J. Amos. The marriage was annulled. Clara' parents Austin and Amanda (Mandy) did not approve of this marriage for their eldest daughter.
Per the 1910 census for Knoxville, Marion Co., Iowa, James W. Franks, age 43, had been married for 18 years to Clara, age 40. Living with them were their two children: Mildred, age 17; and Grace, age 5.
