Notes for Thomas Ussery, Jr.
His father's will, written on 10 Jun 1811, says: "I give and bequeath to my son Thomas the whole of my land on which I now live and also my Negro man Charles, after the death of myself and wife." Evidently both parents had died before June 1818 for on that date Thomas felt free to sell the slave his father had willed to him.
He moved his family to Maury County, Tennessee prior to 1820 when he is shown on the census of that county. Census records Show that he was probably the father of 14 children but the names of most of these have not been discovered.
We know that Thomas Ussery of Maury Co., Tennessee, registered a bill of sale for the slave mentioned above on 3 June 1818 in Maury Co. Court, Bk. 162 #177. The item reads: " Thomas Ussery of Maury County sold to Jos. Morehead of Maury County` a Negro man by the name of Charles, which Negro was left me by father's will, at the death of my mother." this proves convincingly that Thomas of Maury Co., TN, was the son of Thomas, Esq. of Montgomery Co., N.C. The 1820 census for Maury Co. shows Thomas Ussery's household. In that household are two males between the ages of 10 and 16 yrs. This would be the right group for Sylvester and Peter. Sylvester later went to Illinois and Peter to Missouri.
Informatin from Ussery bulletin (John Usry) - "Thomas Ussery was born about 1773, probably in or near Montgomery County, North Carolina. He appears in the 1810 U.S. census for Richmond County, NC, age 26-45, with a wife and three children. In the 1820 census, he is in Maury Co., TN, age 45 or more. If this is correct, he was born before 1775. The name of his wife has not been determined. According to the census records his children are approx. as listed."
